Depending on the nature of the work, programmers may work alone or with others in a large work group. In most instances, they work along with other computer professionals such as software engineering specialists in order to help bring new programs to life. They also work to improve current software programs by continually updating them to meet new standards.

Both large and small companies may have the need for a computer programmer. While some may need programmers to analyze systems, other companies require the type of programmer that can work with network systems as a whole. The software that drives the business might be commercially available or customized specifically for the company.

To break into this field, a computer programming degree is a must. The knowledge and skills to develop the basic skills can take as little as one or maybe two years to learn.
